Change Advice from a Legend – Michael Jackson

It’s the first couple of days of the New Year and we are all looking for how we can make that change last and meaningful. The power of music has that ability to keep us motivated and inspired. I thought that I would try something a little different and look to a legend to help motivate us for 2017. That person is Michael Jackson, and his song “Man in the Mirror” might help. This 1988 top charting classic, in my eyes, is a powerful piece about a personal commitment to change.

At times, we hope that others will change for us and that will make us happier and life easier. However, we need to look within to understand why we feel the way that we do. This might require a little soul searching and self-discovery.

Here are the lyrics that really stood out for me, in this song, were:

I’m starting with the man in the mirror - (Ooh!)

I’m asking him to change his ways - (Ooh!)

And no message could have been any clearer

If you wanna make the world a better place

Take a look at yourself and then make a change

What I love about this song is that these lyrics are repeated throughout. Like other things in life, we need to hear it more than once to make it stick. Also, the power of the gospel choir in the latter part of the song is quite inspirational and moving. Michael Jackson’s energy, passion, and talent were and still are an inspiration to many. His music will live on forever.
